After a couple of unsuccessful years as a journeyman rockabilly singer/guitarist, Dick Dale almost single-handedly invented instrumental surf music. He drowned his impossibly dexterous shred-guitar style in an ocean of echo and reverb (younger generations familiar with Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine should know that the sound started with Dale) and added trumpet, Latin percussion, and oddball reinterpretations of things like the Greek dance tune "Misirlou." Dale created an entire genre that is still alive today.
One of the best single-disc Dale anthologies available, GREATEST HITS includes almost all of the necessities ("Misirlou," "Let's Go Trippin'," "Mr. Eliminator," etc) alongside equally fantastic but relatively obscure numbers like "Death of a Gremmie" and a surf-rock version of the theme from PETER GUNN. Which, of course, rocks. Essential for surf fans.
