Dionne Warwick's GREATEST HITS 1979-1990 is a welcome recapitulation of a spotty but often impressive period in the singer's career, which had been resuscitated by Arista head Clive Davis, who was masterminding the blossoming career of Warwick's cousin Whitney Houston at the same time. Warwick's voice, still outstanding two decades after her first hit, is what lifts these tracks above the pedestrian.
The first cut, a version of Carole Bayer Sager's "That's What Friends Are For" was recorded with Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder as the music industry's first high-profile AIDS benefit single. It's the album's best-known track, along with the hit "I'll Never Love This Way Again."
